Restaurant Review: Pepe’s Pizza

March 8, 2012 § 1 Comment

I recently ate at Pepe’s, a famous New Haven establishment known for its pizza. It was around 7:30 on a Saturday night and the place was packed. There are actually two buildings for sit-in dining. We waited in line at the one called “The Spot” since it seemed like it had a shorter wait time. We still waited about half an hour before being seated.

We ordered the traditional pie, which is tomato sauce and sprinkled parmesan, and added mozzarella on top. A small is $8.00 and is the perfect size for two people to share.

So, how was the pizza? I think it is overrated, but then again I’m not a big fan of the thin-crust style – I love my thick doughy crusts. Additionally, the sauce was a little too sweet and overwhelming, and there was not much cheese. There was also a lot of grease pooling on top of the pizza. The service was great, but I don’t think I’ll be coming back.
